What name do you give to an edit where you take like 5 hours of film and reduce it down to 15 or 20 minutes?
I'm thinking of like a camcorder film where scenes are really long and you just want to end up with something succinct.

That's just editing, throwing away the trash. The stuff you throw away is out of play; we call them culls. But you find out later, as you get deep into the edit, that you really need one of those trashed shots to fill in the storyline . So you keep them. Depending on what happens next in your project's timeline, which ends with a release clip, you could call it Best, Selects, or Culled. It's just a collection of the best footage, right? It's not the finished project, right? If you're using FCPX well, you don't create a project like this, you note all of these subclass as Favorites and use them from Smart Collections.
But naming your project is personal. Call it Timmy if you want to.
Well its not so much about naming a project as about trying to distinguish the types of edit. Like editing based on a theme or events, simple cutting, reordering or deeper. Adding sound or not, voice commentary, titles. Trying to catalogue what can be done.
So I was thinking that there are different ways to remove the "trash" as you go through. The long and tedious bits, or focus on a person, persons. If in an event like a wedding, focus on the people getting married with multiple angles best case. If editing a play, you don't reduce down generally but work on multicam if you have multiple angles. You would reduce down though if doing a teaser, or rather select just good bits.
I guess this is a business question because I'm trying to describe to potential customers (some of) the things that are possible.
Just say, a wedding for example, which I've done tons of in the past, "We film the whole thing, cut out what isn't needed because it either is boring, or we're limited on the duration of the final product." There's no real technical term beside "editing" or "media management".
IIt's all about keywords and favorites.
